Bruichladdich Tasting with Jim McEwan
Tasting Date: Sep. 21, 2006
Tasting Place: 台北遠東飯店大都會廳
Bruichladdich 12yo (46%, OB, 2006)
Color: Golden, watering legs, thick.
Nose: Very malty, nut, sweet, cookie/cereal, hint of orange peel. Adding water get fresh fruit and vanilla.
Palate: Light and dry, very short finish.
Conclusion: 81 point. This is actually the “new 10yo core range”, unlike the old 12yo matured fully in sherry oak, this one is a vatting of bourbon and sherry casks. It performs better than the original 10yo but not that much as declared.
Bruichladdich 14yo Links 5th Edition Royal Liverpore Hay Lake (46%, OB, 2006)
Color: Deep gold, oil, legs slow.
Nose: Sweet, 牛軋糖, tropical fruit, cream, red fruit, 開心果, adding water get clear vanilla and candy sweet.
Palate: Medium body, very nice finish, clear and sweet, yet still get good and clear house style.
Conclusion: 83 points. I think Link series is very good gift, we never get what the real taste style in this series.
Bruichladdich Infinity (55%, OB)
91 points, good as usual. I really like this one. Jim said there will be Infinity second edition available end of this year.
Bruichladdich 3D 3rd Edition for Norman Campbell (46%, OB)
Color: watering, has slow.
Nose: Peaty, with earthy note. Very fruity one. Ocean and iodine. Adding water get more fruit and vanilla.
Palate: Very sweet, medium body, medium finish. Excellent palate, sweet finish.
Conclusion: 92 points. This is the first bottle to include some Octomore inside. I really like this one.
Port Charlotte 5yo PC5 (63.5%, OB)
Color: Brown gold. Clear, heavy body? Very fine legs. Going down slow.
Nose: Clear peat, iodine. Lot’s flower, tropical fruit. Very Islay. Hint of grain note.
Palate: Bitter, medium body. Slow finish. Finished well. Adding water get malt.
Conclusion: 91 points. It’s a very clean and complex malt, not exactly like the one I expect. But at the other hand, seems quite match the Bruichladdich style.
Islay Trilogy 36yo 1969 (40.3%, MMCD, Mission 6, vatting of the 3B distilleries in Islay)
90 points. I remember I gave it a little bit higher several month ago. At that time, I can clear identify the three different distillery house style in this old vatted malt. It’s a pity that they didn’t put a cover on the glass and the tasting last too long. After 2 hours, it’s just gone. Pity.
