Two very old sherry butt Speyside head to head. Quite interesting result.
Carigellachie 33yo 1970 (46%, Murray McDavid, 498b. Mission III)
This is in the Mission III series and dilute to 46%, according to Jim’s tasting note, it was matured in refill sherry butt. Color: Yellow brown, not that dark to make you think it’s sherry cask matured. Very oil, beautiful legs. Nose: so nice, venella, candy. Fruity. Quite strong in nose, very robust. You can get some creaming and white chocolate nose to tell it comes from refill sherry cask. Palate: mild yet lively. Sea? A little bit salty? Strange. Short finish, a little bit bitter. Score: 89. Almost, 90 really. I think it will become even better for a few days.
Millburn 34yo 1967/2001 (50%, OMC, 552b.)
This sample comes from Bird, thanks! Jim Murray gave it 94 and said it’s the best example of sherry cask mature malts. Let’s see how it goes. Color: Dark brown. A sherry monster. Nose: lot’s chocolate at the first. Beautiful legs. Very oil. Hint of fresh fruit, orange, balanced with sherry very well. Probably the first time I like the heavy sherry nose. Palate: orange chocolate, strong body. Burning. Finish: very long. Beautiful Adding water get more orange. A great sherry monster. Score: 90. The winner, I almost want to give it 91.
